Couple questions about kickoff?

Kickoff: is it there anything that has to happen other than the ball has to go 10 yards for the kicking team to receive the ball? Does someone have to touch it? Does it have to touch the ground atleast once? And how come sometimes the kicKing team will wait for the ball to stop moving before touching it, and they don't get the ball?
