What do I say to the hiring manager when "following up on the application"?

I applied for my local grocery store about 2 months ago and they haven't gotten back from me. I called to "follow up" on my application but they don't even ask for my name and just tell me that if I am qualified, they will hire me. I was told to go inside the store and ask to speak to the hiring manager because that's a good way to get a job. However, I'm worried I'll choke up and won't know what to say to the hiring manager. So what should I say when I speak to the manager? Specific questions or statements?
