suggestion on hairstyles?

I shaved the right side on my hair last year very very short and kept everything else long. Now I'm to the point where I think I'm ready to start going the right side back. Thing is I have curly hair and as it grows back I'm starting to get little pieces sticking up and curling. I REFUSE TO CUT THE REST OF MY HAIR OFF but does anyone have any suggestions what to do?
