Can I unlock a phone with a bad esn?

I recently bought an iPhone off of ebay (he told me the phone had a clean esn, but he has an overdue bill on it) and it has a bad esn. I have Sprint. Can I unlock it? If I unlock the phone, will the bad esn go away? Can I use the unlocked phone on sprint or will i have to go to another carrier that is compatible?
