GUYS! What did he mean when he said this?

I told my ex (that I broke up with) that I still like him, and he said "I know." *Add in about a minute of awkward silence* "I just really need a friend right now." What does this mean?! Does he still like me, he just can't handle a relationship right now? OR was he just trying to spare my feelings?
