Can't open windows 8 apps...?

A few days ago I tried to update my laptop to windows 8.1 but found I was unable to access the pre-installed windows 8 apps, including settings. If anyone could explain how to fix this in simple terms (since I'm not great at computing) it would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for any spelling or punctuation errors, Sam
