What types of legendary monsters are good with tinkering and technology?

Can anyone think of some sort of magical creature that is traditionally good at inventing machinery or tinkering? I mean one with a real legendary basis, not something recently made up. I need one for a story I'm planning to write but I'm not sure where to look. Any type of monster is fine, whether it's human like or imp like or even if it looks like a mound of gelatinous pudding. *shrugs* It just needs to have an affinity for machines.
