Hair looks gray but actually isn't?

So when I looked in the mirror a few days ago, I was shocked to see gray hairs along one side of my part (I'm only 18!) But when I examined them closely, I discovered that they're actually black. I washed my hair but that didn't solve it... So why does my hair look gray there? Can it be caused by dandruff or a root spray?
