Why do so many Christians rely on other Christians to accurately explain to them what the bible is really saying?

Isn't that what the Holy Spirit is supposedly for? For example, I heard a woman ask her friend, "Didn't a Christian show that the animals on Noah's ark stayed alive by hibernating the whole time?" That's not in the bible, so where are they coming up with this stuff? Why do they believe each others explanations?
