Why are slugs so expensive?

I was looking at that question the guy asked about the maverick 88 with slugs and was wondering, why are rifled slugs so expensive? They're a dollar a round! They're just lead poured into a mold, right? Or is there a step I'm missing? Seems like if I got a mold I could make my own...
