Do I have to bleach my hair when dip dying with kool aid?

Im a brunnette with really curly hair, and natural blonde highlights. Its medium brown. Im using kool aid, an I heard red only works, which i dont mind. But everyone is telling me that brunettes need to bleach their hair. Is this true? If not, what color should I use,
