Questions about iPod Nano fourth generation.?

I have an iPod Nano fourth generation, and I have a few questions. 1. How do I turn it on? 2. How do I know if it's charging? 3. When it's charging am I supposed to lock it? (Put it where the orange shows?) I plugged it up to my laptop and it says Connected Eject before disconnecting. Is it charging? Please help me, thank you! :)
