Is MDF and particle board safe for home furnitures ?

Hi, I have bought furnitures made of MDF and particle board for my new flat recently. Now I am hearing from people that MDF / particle board are not safe as they off gas formaldehyde. Can please some one let me know if there is any health issue in using them or any precaution that I need to take. - Thank you very much in advance - Suresh
