Is it a good time to buy bf3?

i know its pretty late, but i didnt have time then...but now :-).. Is the multiplayer community still active. I also know that bf4 is six months away,but i dont want to wait dat long .. i havent played any battlefield game to date. so i want to be just prepared.. so should i buy it??
