Why did Congress take on its lowest approval rating in history when republicans regained control of the House?

In 2012, right after the republicans regained control of the House and Mitch McConnell announced that his "top political priority over the next two years should be to deny President Obama a second term" Congress achieved an 8% approval rating, its lowest since the founding of what used to be a great nation.
