Question #6200052

Newborns, genetics and immunity?

I've read that during the colonization a lot of aboriginal people died of diseases that people carry, who wouldn't die. Also, some tribes of the amazon can / have go / gone extinct because of simple everyday colds. However, I've always been curious how a newborn won't die immediately even if there are diseases everywhere. Is our immune system genetic? Has it evolved in such a short time? Thanks a lot!
