Getting rid of a very sore throat?

This is my third day with a sore throat. It hurts very much so to swallow and it is worse in the morning. Ever since I got it, my chest has been in pain and my throat is so sore it gives me a headache and a dry cough. Is there any way to get rid of it other than gargling salt water? (its not working too well and 60% of the time I end up accidentally swallowing it)
