Can you fix a overused, unreliable command for a dog? Or should I make a new one?

My dog came from a foster home where they didn't enforce any 'come' cue 100% of the time or anything and I want to teach a reliable cue but have caught myself using his 'come' and 'here' cues without thinking. Is it possible to fix it if I ban one word for a recall and only use it when I can re-enforce it 100% or come up with a new cue to use?
