Is E 6th st in LA dangerous?

I was just wondering how dangerous is E 6th st. Like if I was just to walk down the side walk will i be in any real danger. I ask because I am a basista at a coffee shop and at night we throw away all the pastries. I was thinking about taking them all and handing them out to the homeless people on 6th st the next day.
