places to go between Manchester and Nottingham?

Me and my boyfriend met at uni and are now both home from the summer, he is from Nottingham and i am from Manchester. We are looking for places we can meet that are about halfway between the 2 but we also want to be able to do something there instead of just walking around bored. I can drive my but my boyfriend cant so he need to be able to get there on public transport easily
