Does big hair looks bad?

Today is my 8th grade graduation and I currently have large/medium curlers in my hair (my mom doesn't let me use heat) she used to be a hairdresser so she's confident that the curls will look right(which I hope they will) but she said I might not like it because my hair will be big. I already have pretty thick hair and the curlers are all the way up, so it will also be a "lift". Just wondering, does big hair look bad!?! Because it seems like everyone tries to make their hair as flat as possible nowadays.
