Will this be harmful for my fish?

I have some babies in my tank. I had more but I think they're being sucked into the filter. I've hear pantyhose helps prevent babies from being sucked into the filter. Is it safe to use pantyhose in your tank? Do I attach the pantyhose to the filter with a rubber band? Is rubber bands safe for fish?
