Can I transfer high schools over the summer?

i finished eighth grade awhile ago and haven't started High School yet. I am registered to a high school right now that is 20 miles away from my house. I want to register to another one that is closer before school starts. Could I do that? Is it possible? If it is possible, could I do sports at the closer high school?
