Where do birds in the UK migrate to for winter?

Just seen a huge flock of birds migrating west out of the UK, toward the Atlantic ocean. Which I thought was unusual because I thought they generally flew south for warmer climates. What countries specifically do birds migrating from Britain go to for winter?
