Why Is It difficult reading books like Sylvia Plath, what to do to understand?

Why Is It difficult to understand boo author , Sylvia Plath books? I came past by one of Sylvia's famous books called the "The Bell Jar". When first reading the beginning chapter, I couldn't understand. Everyone on the reviews knew a different language that I couldn't quite understand :(
