Torrented Games, my own serial code, and online play?

So I used to have Age of Empires 3 Gold Edition but the disk got scratched and no longer works. I ended up getting a setup of the game and installed it but with the serial code they gave me I can't play online. My question is if I were to use my serial code I have when I purchased the game will I be able to play online?
