How do I dye/stain my human hair extensions? They're bright red and apparently non dyeable?

I am able to straighten them and apply any kind of heat so I know they're real but I tried dyeing them with a semi permanent black hair dye and it didn't take any of the dye at all. I'm going for a black to red dip dye affect.
