i tried making lip gloss with vaseline and eyeshadow but...?

i put a little vaseline and dark purple eyeshadow into a little container and mixed it together with a toothpick. the color turned out really pretty and nice, just the way i wanted but when i put it on my lips, the dark purple doesn't show up, it looks like i put on plain vaseline with no color. i want the color to show up on my lips!!! did i do something wrong or what?
