Was Russia the main force behind the USSR? Did Russia force other countries to be in the USSR?

I mean, did Russia force Eastern European countries to be a part or a member of the Soviet Union or did they join the Soviet Union on their own? If Russia forced other Eastern European countries to be a part of the Soviet Union, then Russia just started invading other countries by military forces? Please help. I wanna know. Thank you.
