How to become a music producer?

Hi like music lately and like the idea of it i understand a lot of famous producers lie rick rubin ect are like well have studios with loads of expensive equipment but isn't a music producer someone who knows about mixing engineering dubbing and developing songs so anyone can start part time am i right?
