Guys: would you stare at your female friend for a long time when you talk to her?

My friend does this. I don't know what to think sometimes. I get confused. He scans my face and notices things. Why does he stare at me so much and for so long? I asked him why he does it but he gets shy and then says "erm I always look at my friends like this.." Awkward :/
