What should I do with my hair? Help!?

I'm a light skin asian teenager and have naturally dark brown hair (almost black), but I've been dying my hair a lighter shade of brown for the past couple of years. I get really obvious regrowth when it grows out and I'm sick of getting my roots done all the time. I want to change my hair so that it is low maintenance, but if I dye it completely back to my natural hair colour it would be too boring. I don't want to get balayage/ombre because a lot of my friends have done that already. Should I go back to dark brown and get highlights that start lower on my hair? I am seriously clueless, I've never gotten highlights, I don't even know what to ask the hairdresser... HELP! Suggestions would be appreciated.
