Do Christians think that if a majority of people voted to permit slavery, then slavery should be allowed?

I would think the answer in MOST cases, is no. Then why do they think that if a majority of people vote to disallow gay marriage, then gay marriage should be disallowed? BONUS QUESTION Doesn't it seem that in nearly everything they say, do or advocate, most Christians appear to by hypocrites?
