Dip dye effect on hair?

I currently have blonde hair which has been dyed. I really love the dip dye effect with brown at top then blonde on bottom. However I'm worried if I dye agin, the ends of my hair will be in very bad condition. Is there any way of just dying the top of the head and making it blend in that way? Therefore I wouldn't have to ruin the ends....thanks!
