What is an Apple AirPort Express for?

I got one of these for free and I looked it up and it's $100! So I must have gotten a good deal. It's so complicated looking at Apple.com so could someone just explain most if not all of the things it can do? I feel like I might've been missing out the last few days because ihavent used it! Oh... I think it's from 2009.
