Why won't my fire eel eat?

I bought my fire eel 5 days ago and if never seen him eat i have attempted to hand feed him blood worms if put it on one of my old tank cleaning rods and he still won't eat he doesn't eat when I just drop in the blood worms. What should I do . I have tiger barbs black widow tetras a couple of sword tails and a algae eater . It's a big tank about as long as a broom. My ph is ideal and I have low nitrate levels .
