Why can't I download files larger than 200-300mb anymore?

I didn't always have this problem but recently whenever I try to download a file that's larger it freezes and I have to start the download over again, so what's the problem and how can I fix it? This happens on Mozilla and Internet Explore so I don't think the browser is the issue!
