Why are some trucks like the f250 and the 2500s gas and diesel?

I always wonder why there's some gas 250s and diesel 250s. So why can they be both and what is different between the two? Besides the fact that ones diesel and ones gas? Is a 250 gas better than a 150? If it is how so?
