Audition songs for a black hairsrpay chracter?

I am an African American female and I want to audition for Hairspray next summer (I'm planning way ahead, I know, at least I'll have ample practice time) and I can't figure out what song to audition with. None of the musicals that I know have songs that I feel fit the style that the African American characters sing in Hairspray. I don't really mind what role I get, I just want to be in the production. Can someone give me a little direction? Thanks!
