Is it ok to take metronidazole?

I think I have a bacterial infection and my doc called out metronidazole without testing. I have a creamy, not cottage cheesy discharge, but no odor or itching. In case I dont have an infection, is it still ok to take it? Are there any side effects. Im on birth control too. Will that effect anything?
