Is it alright to not let your dog out of the house?

I just just realized that ever I've had my dog for around 6 years now and I have never let him out the house. All I do is feed him and all he does is sleep. He is really quiet and always cries. He always wants to leave the house but I'm too busy to walk him, so he just stays inside and sleeps all day.
