Should I fall for a guy again?

I am in high school, and wondering if I should fall for a guy again. 2 years ago I totally fell for this guy (we'll call him Jake) and he turned out to be a complete and total douche bag. It took me a year to get over him, but now I am. I haven't liked anyone for a year now, and there's this guy who my best friend (well call her Kate) had been friends with since they were in Pre-K. His name is (well call him Mark). We don't know each other well yet, but that's because we both just started going to the same school. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get to know him and hopefully take things farther if he wants to. I am just really scared I'll fall really hard for him and then find out he doesn't like me at all but he just led me on. ANd I'm not sure I can handle something like that again. Any input would be very appreciated. Thanks
