Virginia Divorce / Separation Period?

In the State of Virginia I know you have to be separated for 1 year before you can file. If that is correct, is there anyway to file for separation but still live under one roof because of financial hardship?We would like to start the process but need to get money arrangements in order. Thank you for any advice you have.
