im scared and nervous of gong to the dentist?

I'm scared and nervous about going to see a dentist because I haven't seen one in so long. My teeth are pretty bad and super super sensitive, I don't think I could stand letting one feeling around them with a metal object. How does the dentist keep you from feeling that pain and is there any point where they won't or can't stop the pain you feel while they're working on your teeth?
