Information on Geology?

I'm doing grade 11 in South Africa, next year is my final year in high school and then it's off to varsity. I'm kinda deciding on what i want to major in, and I found an interest in geology, which seems like the right track with all the mining activity etc. I want to know about what geologists do, what types of geologists there are(i want to specialise in the mining field), what the salary ranges are, how the actual work atmosphere feels, if it's a disadvantage being like really short(155cm around 4ft11), and from possible geologists i'd also like to know the pros and cons. Please help...
