What does it mean when a guy calls every few months like he never stopped talking to you?

I went on a great first date over a year ago with a guy. We never kissed or anything like that. Never went out again. Every couple of months he'll call or text me like there has been no gap in time. I'm confused about his interest level and why he keeps doing this.
