Verizon and T-Mobile texting problems?

I have verizon and some of my friends have t-mobile. It seems that only with the ones with t-mobile that there are sending and receiving issues. Sometimes messages will be sent but not received on the other end. Like if someone with t-mobile texts me I don't always get the message. It will show up as sent for them but I show them my phone and it was never received on my end or possibly vice versa. Anyone else experience this problem and no what causes it and how to fix it?
