Facebook photos take up too much memory when I'm on my news feed site. How do i solve this problem?

My friend has an old computer, running Windows XP and has about 1400 MB of RAM, normally using 3 to 4 hundred Megs of RAM. but all the photos loading on facebook shoot the memory usage up to over 1000. this causes the computer to freeze up often and run even slower than usual. suggestions?
