What scenario would hurt you more?

Say you are best friends (like best, best, best friends...inseparable almost) with someone. You like your best friend (or your best friend likes you). Which one is worse: 1. Getting rejected by your best friend that did not want a romantic relationship. -or- 2. Having the rejected friend end your friendship even though you really want to remain friends with them.
