Why are some stores strict in selling M rated video games?

Stores like Gamestop ask for ID if you're buying M rated games and you look under 17. Now, I don't get it. Why do they even have these ratings and why are they strict in selling violent video games to minors?? These video games are fake violence. Who is going to be stupid enough to imitate what is on these video games?
